Abstract is not synonymous with Chaos.  In this class we will explore the basic principles of composition to create an abstract painting. Possible compositions, color dominance, open ended technique and intuitive painting will be covered.  Focus is on implied texture and color.  Explore applications with scrapes, covers, uncovers, builds, and expose layers of paint.

Learn to Tackle the Torch. If you’ve ever wanted to work with metal but are intimidated by the torch, this is the class for you.  In this beginning solder class you will learn to cut, file, texture, patina and solder while designing and creating a unique pendant using sterling silver and copper.  All materials and use of tools is supplied. All you need to bring is your imagination.

Enameling on copper is a hot technique! You will learn the basic techniques of applying powdered glass onto copper and see the magic of enamel come alive.  This class will show you how to prepare the copper, apply enamels and torch fire your pieces to create your own wearable art. This class is an introduction to basic enameling and all supplies will be provided.  Just show up with your imagination and a love for color.

New Class... Fun and Colorful - with Sharon Giles
Tuesday Feb. 22 - Thursday April 6 - 12:30 to 3:30

A workshop based on the fabulous style used by Australian Aboriginal artists! The methods are simple but the results are spectacular. Using basic shapes, dots, lines and much repetition, create beautiful and unique art.  - Creatures Feb 22, Flowers April 6
Materials needed - Small canvas (16x20 or smaller) or 1/4 sheet of gessoed watercolor paper, acrylic paint, assorted brushes.  Optional -  Puff paints or liquid pearls.  Instructor will bring other supplies.

Your creativity will flourish in this one-day workshop! Come prepare to have fun and be amazed by the art that YOU create... FABULOUS ART with vibrant colors.  Unpredictable, wildly colorful, fascinating and fun; alcohol inks are amazing. The colors run, expand, drip, speckle, make waves, bloom and blossom.  Alcohol inks create stunning art... the colors are super bright, and the inks are fluid and highly interactive. Expect to go home with a collection of beautiful artwork. Supplies included in the class - Glossy paper, ceramic tile, yupo paper,. pipette, texture wrap, shiny gold for dots.   
Cost -  $100.
Supplies needed - 3 to 6 colors of Alcohol Ink (available at Michaels/HL), 1 bottle of Blending Solution for Alcohol Inks, bottle of 91% alcohol (from the drug store), black Sharpie pen (fine tip), 12 x 12" or smaller stretched canvas.

Encaustics - Marks, Tar, marks and textures!

A quick review of Encaustic basics and ‘painting’ with hot wax. Explore new techniques for applying hot wax and working with tar for added embellishment in the design. Enjoy the  exploration of mark making using different materials such as pencils, inks and pastels, and how to incorporate them into an Encaustic painting.

Bezel Making and Stone Setting

Fabulous Pendant - with Sibling Rivalry (Rick and Laura)

Take your jewelry to the next level! You will design a sterling silver pendent, make a bezel that custom fits a cabochon which is soldered onto the pendent and then set the stone to create a one of a kind necklace.  You will impress yourself with your new skill! Prior soldering experience is necessary.  All materials and supplies provided.

gourd art - with rust and patina

SOMETHING NEW with Suzanne McNeill-Sparks

Add a beautiful rustic steel and copper surface to rustic gourds. Delve into the mysteries of genuine metal elements.  Coax steel metal to rust to a rich reddish color - turn copper metal into a blueish-green verdigris patina. Learn to make a small molded face. We'll accomplish all of this in one day. 
Supplies included in the class - Your choice of one natural gourd, sampler gourd pieces, Gesso, Solutions for Rust and Patina, small sculpted face, tools.

Supplies needed - Bring an extra gourd if you would like to embellish it (or purchase one at the studio).

Gelli ART Printing - transfer on Canvas

Create extraordinarily beautiful translucent papers with your favorite colors and textures. We’ll use the amazing process of Gelli Art® printing to make a series of papers with acrylic paints. We’ll add these and black  ink drawings to canvas to create a beautiful piece of art.
Supplies included in the class - Textures, translucent paper.
Materials needed - 4 to 6 colors of Acrylic paint, 12 x 12” canvas (or four 6 x 6" canvases - from Michaels), Matte medium, 1/2” brush, Pitt BIG Brush black pen (or a Chisel-tip black Sharpie), Gelli plate and brayer (if you have them, or you can share mine).

The Art of Suminagashi

​Barbara teaches watercolor, oils, acrylics, pastels, and mixed media at Sparks Studio Art. Her Monday night venue is an on-going painting class every week.  All painting and drawing mediums are welcome.  Work on your own individual projects in the material of your choice.  BEGINNERS are welcome.  Each student receives personal instruction.

Barbara McFarland  - Magnum Cum Laude UNT grad, B.F.A in painting and drawing from U.N.T. in Denton. She works in watercolor, oils, acrylics, pastels, and mixed media. Her work has received numerous awards in local, regional, and national shows. She has spent two summers painting on location at the La Romita School of Art in Italy.
